Victorian Designs : The difference between real life and Steampunk

king-edward-steam-train-1

As you can see to your right, you can see a steam train made in the Victorian age. This uses a traditional Steam powered mechanics to create kinetic energy to move its locomotive. There is many differences between Real-life Victorian designs and Steampunk designs, The first one is that quite a lot of steam punk designs uses actual Chemical Energy from battery as its source because if you replace it with steam powered then, A, you would need and lot of heat come off that source and , B, because you would need a lot more coal to maintain that heat coming off that source meaning battery’sis just alot more convenient. This was a problem back then because they didn’t know anything about any other energy source other then Steam meaning that they only had certain amount of space in there designs. In the current day, We know about battery meaning that some people that like the conventional Victorian Design format (Heavy Metal, Steam, etc…) can implement today’s knowledge about technology into old designs which might of been an extra-ordinary device back then. Some people choose the Victorian design format then the Current Day design otherwise known as the 21st century design format (Clean Surface, Clean cut lines, Highly advanced) because of the simplicity of the design format of the 21st century.

Most Steam punk designs are mainly a device that we already have access to (Watch, Televisions, etc…) that they didn’t have in the Victorian Century, then what they would do is stick Victorian Fabrics over it and chains and maybe some heavy metal work to make it look Victorian and then it would be classed as steampunk work.

Steampunk : Developing

To start of my developing of my Beats Pill I first got the dimensions of the Beats Pill in comparison to the photoshop scale. Soon enough, it come out like this Beats Pill Dimensions

To get this output, I had to find the scale conversion which meant I had to do the following algorithm

No. of blocks width = N

No. of blocks high = H

N/Actual Width

and

H/Actual Hight

This is the algorithm put into practise

I then implemented this scale conversion into the photo shop document as 1 block is 5mm in real life

Steampunk Artist’s

Datamancer – http://www.datamancer.net This steampunk artist designer creates real pieces of steampunk and mixes it with modern day IT (for example, he got a HP laptop and took the case of the laptop away and replaced it with a wood and brass case and then made it look old fashioned)

He then does improvements on all of his designs, right below is a improvement of the laptop made above

Crabfu SteamWorks – http://www.crabfu.com  This steampunk artist creates all of his items by scratch, he develops small robotic machines which have a steampunk theme to it. Amazingly, the all look complex to make and looks like a long time has been put into making these

Steampunk Designs

Design 1: This device was originally a Beats Pill which has had a filter added over it. Ive also taken out the beats logo and replaced it with a steam-punk graphic. I’ve also put on pipes on the top and bottom of it and when it comes round to making it, I will most likely use PVP Pipes. The pipes also was a chrome colour but then I changed the Hue and Saturation of it then added a filter over the top.

The most difficult part of me making this design would have to be putting the cogs behind the grill of the speaker; for that I had to copy the grill and remove the holes in the mesh so that the cogs could be seen through the mesh. I then changed the order of the layers so the Modified is on top and then the cogs under it and then the actual Beats Pill

The Easiest Part of compiling this Photoshop document is the Pipes. I used a graphic (See bellow) off of the internet. This graphic house multiple pipes in one picture, I then choose the pipes which I wanted (which was a L pipe and a Stright pipe) and then aligned them so they look like a handel, I then made two of them and placed on at the bottom and one at the top

Design 2 :

This device is a speaker which is in a diffrent style then to the beats pill. This one is sort of a low level design as all it needs is diffrent types of fabric stuck onto the speaker. In most of the other designs, I would stick some sort of physical object on it like a chain or a pipe but on this one there is just fabrics.

This was a fairly easy device to create, but the most easiest part would have to be the part where I added in all these different effects to the speaker like a back shadow. However, If I did try and make this one, the back shadow is only part of the photo shop design because you cannot bad a back shadow unless you made some sort of static light

Steampunk

What is Steampunk?

Steampunk is a type of genre which implements modern technology and architecture into an old period of time. An example of this might be that someone from the 15th century (Tudor Period) might be wearing some sort of mechanical limb (this is commonly an arm) which then has a function for which that time period might be extra-ordinary

It is most commenly used in films (like Frankienstain Army and Golden Compass) but this isnt the only area where Steampunk is used. It is also used in games (like Borderlands and Dishorned). From this we can tell this is a genre which the media is very interested in

Here are a few examples :

Example 1

This Example shows multiple figures wearing different items that can relate to steampunk. The best figure that shows steampunk is the character on the far right. You can see that the goggles that he is wearing has some sort of extra viewing feature most probably that the human eye cannot natively see. You can also see that on his back there is a steam-powered energy pack meaning that he can bring his energy anywhere to use his obscure devices

Example 2

This example shows a mechanical leg which (from an educated guess) could give the user a outragous amount of strength on his leg. The dials on the front of the leg gives the impression that the leg most probably works on compressed air

Example 3

This last example shows a steampunk themed watch. In fact this watch really works and could be easily devolved. However, this does not give the users anything specail compared to most steampunk tech, instead this just gives you the power to read time where ever you are like a normal watch.

Conclusion

Overall, I belive that what could be counted as steampunk is anything that looks of and Victorian metal and has some sort of purpose that without you can not do. All of the above does go under this definition but what could be easily mistaken for is that steampunk gives you supernatural abilities which it can do but that’s not the definition of steampunk. I choose the watch to show that steampunk doesn’t always have to be about super natural powers but instead modern technology to the past in an old style
